Steel Panthers
Date: May 18, 2016
Location: The Fonda Theatre

Won tickets to this show the week of and deciding to blindly attend. I’ve heard of the band before but not their music. After my pleasant experience at Amoeba, it was time to head to the venue. Arrived a few minutes before the opening band went on stage and found a great spot to view the stage. Suddenly the lights went off and Sabyrtooth hit the stage with all members wearing white masks. The odd appearance of the band got the audience pumped up as they rocked their first song. As the song came to an end so did their masks to the disappoint of the crowd. The band continued to pump the band for the next half hour. Never heard of this band, but I enjoyed their performance. At the end of their performance one of the female attendees who was standing in front of me went on stage to perform two songs with the band. So the opening bands came up and they went off stage. It was unique experience in that this is the first concert I’ve attended where I enjoyed the opening band more than the main band. If given the chance I’d like to see Sabyrtooth again in the near future.

It would be over an hour before the main band hit the stage. This was the longest break I’ve experienced, for a while I was not sure if the band was actually going to go on stage. After a grueling wait the band finally hit the stage! The band members all had 80’s heavy metal inspired clothing on, heavy make up on what appeared to be plastic surgery faces. It truly felt like watching a glam rock band that was in their prime in the 80s. The band started out strong with their performance of Eyes of a Panther killing it and causing a huge excitement over the crowd. Unfortunately the adrenaline quickly stopped because the band went on a 15 minute rank about nonsensical things. From memory they started talking about how they’ve been around for so many years and how they’ve been touring. Then the rant turned to their plastic surgery and long introduction of every member. I understand that the band was trying to be humorous but I found it pretentious and dragged on too long. I quickly became bored and though to myself. “Why am I here?” After this experience I realized that I need to be more selective in what concerts to attend so I don’t end up at another one similar as this one.  Finally they started playing again but by the end of Just Like Tiger Woods I was done though. In the middle of Nothin’ but a Good Time I left deciding that I’ve had enough. The one thing about the band that I will remember is the guitarist who was on the far left of the stage. It constantly seemed that there was a fan off stage aimed at him because his hair constantly moved . I mean his hair flowed through out the performances distracting me from their music. That’s my biggest takeaway from this hair metal band, their hair.
